YOUTHSAC

The Young Syrian American Club was established in 2005 to promote the appreciation and understanding of our customs among the younger generation.  Since then, it has flourished into an active organization.
We began our YSAC year with an end of the summer ice cream social.  That was just the start.  It led up to our most prominent event of the year, our Ramadan Iftar that was supported by many generous donors from the Houston area. This event proved to be exceedingly rewarding, as we served dates at sunset to more than 90 community members in the Al-Sham Cultural Center .

One month later, cheerful holiday spirits soared at our Christmas Mixer, where we built a gingerbread house, guessed how many candy kisses were in a jar, and enjoyed the warm presence of our friends.

Sunday November 12, 2006 marked the beginning of Team Syria’s first coed soccer season; since then we have participated in three seasons at the Southwest Indoor Soccer Center, where we faced intense competition from other teams.  Currently, we are doing very well and will be moving up a division in the upcoming season.
Aside from our social events we involved ourselves in community service such as collecting canned goods during our Christmas Mixer to donate to a local shelter.  Moreover, a few motivated YSAC community members participated in Relay for Life on April 13, 2007, which is an overnight event to support the American Cancer Society and its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

Other activities such as movie night, bowling night, and picnics have taken place.  Future activities include a card tournament, picnics, fashion show, and one of our anticipated events is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2007 for further collaboration with the Syrian American Club. We want to makes sure we have a very successful event. Kinan Azmeh, the distinguished Syrian Clarinetist, would be the main attraction at this event. We envision a night to remember that will display the heart of Syria through poetry, music, and art.

Through continued collaboration between the SAC and YSAC, we hope to continue to educate ourselves and community about our ancestry and to remind each other that we are a unique part of the whole.

The YouthSAC is intended form members of the community between 18 and 30 years of age.  To get involved, join the mailing list, or receive invitations to upcoming events, email us.
